SeedarGrain Driers building up to UK Grain

The latest edition of most agricultural magazines contain special features on grain drying and storage. Much of this has been spurred on by the popularity of UK grain, to be held 3rd November at the East of England Showground. The exhibition promises to be an excellent opportunity to examine the entire grain handling industry in one place.

As part of this build up we have been giving interviews to various publications. These have addressed a range of subjects from the most recent innovations at Seedarto our opinions on general industry trends. We have seen articles published in both Anglia Farmer and Farmers Guide. However, the article of particular interest was produced by Farm Contractor and Large Scale Farmer (unfortunately not available online). Andy Collings investigated today’s mobile grain drier industry and produced a comprehensive and informative article.

Significant market growth

The article focused on the transformation in recent years of the mobile batch grain drier. Historically, it was viewed as being limited to a small number of specific applications but now it has evolved into a highly valued item of machinery for farms of all sizes throughout the UK. The article identifies the principle drivers for this change as being:

  • engineering developments in the grain driers, and
  • farmers increasingly scrutinising the economics of different managment options

Specific engineering developments cited as being responsible for this growth in popularity are, improved automation and larger batch capacities. These ensure that mobile grain driers suit the requirements of small farms and also those farms demanding high hourly outputs. The second identified driver is a result of farmers more rigorously considering the entire range of grain drying options and closely examining the economics of each. The mobile grain drier has the advantage of being a comparatively small capital investment whilst maintaining a high resale value. Combined with low operational costs this creates a strong economic case for investment.

In today’s market, mobile batch grain driers offer excellent drying performance and have a compelling economic case. Perhaps, as the title of the article in Farm Contractor suggests, mobile driers are coming of age.
