SeedarFarmers – Andrew Pendry, Old Rides Farm

This week Farmers Weekly interviewed Andy Pendry of Burden Brothers on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. A short video interview in the article gives an interesting insight into how intensive large scale production is managed by Andy and he takes a look at the equipment required for this.

Andy is the Farm Director and manages the agronomy for in excess of 1,000 hectares of Grade 1 loam and heavy London blue clay soils. As part of this the farm grows 120ha of combinable maize that’s used to feed the farms 1100 suckler herd with followers, with some being sold on to other producers. The maize is generally dried for storage using a SeedarS 35 T mobile batch grain drier which is used almost exclusively for this task. The average grain maize yield for the Falkone and Cerruti varieties is 8.5 t/ha.

This application of the Seedargrain drier takes it back to its origins. Our Italian manufacturer, SeedarSpA, originally developed the mobile grain drier for maize and rice in the early 1980’s. The Seedardrier has since been developed to efficiently dry all cereals, pulses and oilseeds. Today there are developments afoot enabling the machine to dry a variety of other materials including wood chips and recycled plastics.

This constant development of the Seedargrain drier is a direct result of our aim to continue improving our machines offering greater benefit to the farmer.

At the end of the article Andy draws up a kit list for his farm, detailing what he uses to get the job done. The Seedargrain drier is included in this, demonstating its value to even the very largest farming operations. It is also further recognition that even in one of the driest areas of the country a mobile batch grain drier can add value to a crop and increase the number of management options open to the farmer.
