Galvanising ensures Seedargrain driers are built to last

In my previous post I discussed the return on investment offered by on-farm grain drying. Essentially, the longer the machine operates effectively the greater the financial returns. Whilst longevity depends on many things including correct operation and regular maintenance, it is most significantly influenced by the quality of the design and engineering. Seedarhave identified the need for extensive galvanising to lengthen the operational life of its grain driers as a basic engineering requirement.

Hot dip galvanising is the process of coating steel with a thin layer of zinc. This is achieved by passing the metal through a molten bath of zinc at a temperature of around 460°C. When exposed to the atmosphere the pure zinc reacts with oxygen, forming zinc oxide, and further reacts with carbon dioxide, forming zinc carbonate. This gives a dull grey, fairly strong material that prevents further corrosion. Galvanised steel is used in many applications where rust resistance is needed, such as on the the areas exposed to heat and moisture on a grain drier. It can be easily identified by the crystallisation patterning on the surface known as spangle.

The presentation above shows the extensive galvanising on the Seedargrain drier, offering very high levels of corrosion resistance to the key elements of the drier.

Operators of mobile grain driers will know that areas including the bottom of the drier hopper, the intake auger pipe and the intake hopper are particularly prone to wear. On the Seedargrain drier these are all galvanised giving much improved resistance to corrosion.

There is also the added benefit to those farms situated close to the coast. An aggressive saline environment can result in the quick deterioration of machinery, the galvanising offers an even more pronounced benefit in this situation.
